In the present work Wonder Bunny, we are held captive by the lustrous fibers encasing the rabbit, but at the same time, we are unable to make sense of its slightly awkward position against the barely perceptible silhouette. Superimposed onto the struggling figure that is trapped by the twisting vines, the docile bunny ironically deprives the scene from any mobility.
Uy’s Wonder Bunny is both hyper-realistic and graphical, where the illusionistic three-dimensional ‘bunny’ is adhered onto a completely flat, two-dimensional plane. This unusual combination imparts a deadpan and humorous underpinning. The ‘wonder’ in Wonder Bunny is translated across multiple registers, apparent in the jarring spatial incongruity and the bizarre juxtaposition of opposites. The suffering figure and the apathetic rabbit are simultaneously tangled together by their pictorial elements and severed from each other by their stylistic discontinuity. What we discover in Uy’s works is therefore a playful provocation of the banal and the mundane.
