As seen through Indieguerillas work, they play an essential role of magnifying and dissecting Indonesia’s evolving culture and art scene. Skip You, Start Me specifically looks at the clashes between the East and the West, seeing the impact it has had on Indonesia’s cultural identity.

This exuberantly colorful piece dives right into the issue, having a visually fresh composition; they attain a distinctive and symbolic look. The main focus of this piece is the woman in her undergarments. The clothes she wears, or to rephrase, lack of clothes, contrasts against the traditional conservative standards of Indonesian attire. Through this, Indieguerillas make it aware that there has been a dramatic change in the tastes and values of society.

The distorted figure places a greater emphasis on the perception of the human body, touching on topics dealing with insecurity and apprehension. The bright peachy colour skin tone used also helps stress this idea as the figure leaps out from the background.

The two hands in the background; similar to the ones seen in ‘The Creation of Adam’ by Michael Angelo are combined with dragons and lotus flowers; symbols which have great authenticity to Indonesia in terms of religion and culture. Pairing these familiar images from the West as well as combining them with exaggerated tones of colour, creates a very unique piece.

Seeking for truth, the masks are stripped away, revealing the underlying reality of the matter. Indieguerillas bring something new to the table through their juxtaposed images adding a bit of charm which gives the piece a sense of life and humor. In Skip You, Start Me, foolishness is a key theme, as part of the Fools’lore: Folklore Reload exhibition, Indieguerillas emphasize on the idea of fooling around, producing exciting and surprising narrations for each piece, continuously bringing out the inner youth out of their complex philosophies.
