Condition
The work is in good condition overall. The canvas is clear and taut. There are indications of light wear and handling around the edges. Under ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of retouching. Unframed, on stretcher. No ostensible conditional problems apparent to the sculpture.

《過生日》裡的小男孩右手持氣球，左手持玩具手槍，顫抖直立，面帶恐懼。藍色的氣球無力地懸挂空氣中，它的歡樂感與場景不符。男孩憂鬱的眼神與扁起的嘴巴背後是焦急的迷惑，如同在雜亂無章的世界思量人生意義的所在。小男孩腳跟處擺有不少生日禮物，本應讓人興奮，卻暫被遺忘在角落。生日明明是歡樂喜慶的，小壽星無論自我、自戀、自私都不會被責罰。然而，巴爾哈卻讓這男孩反省自我，像是問：我在這裡究竟為何？
正因為作品十分卡通，其中帶出的病態感才更加震撼。圖像觸及最赤裸的情感，牽動心弦。《過生日》是陰沈的雨天，陽光一閃即逝 ，生存意志漸漸流逝；一點藍色與橙色掩蓋不了單一暗淡的主色調。這灰濛濛一片更顯巴爾哈致力營造的悲傷。《過生日》的内容就像作家亨特·湯普森所寫：「我們都是孤獨的，獨自出世，獨自死去，當我們回顧過去，雖有伴侶，但我們一路孤獨的走來。我不是說寂寞，至少不全是，但本質上，我們始終是孤獨一人。」
