Premier critique à avoir signalé André Gide au public anglais, Edmund Gosse entretint dès l'année 1909 une correspondance suivie avec le romancier. Sur les conseils de son ami, Gosse entreprit durant l'été 1912 la lecture de Paludes. Profondément impressionné, il lui écrivit le 30 août : "I have now finished "Paludes" with infinite relish and entertainment. It is a unique book, like nothing else. It seems to have fallen from heaven, perfect, without parentage". (Brugmans, n°25). Dans ses Portraits and Sketches, Gosse consacra à Paludes un long paragraphe, estimant qu'il s'agit là d'un livre exquis. En visite à Paris, le couple Gosse en profita le 21 mai 1913 pour venir rendre visite à Gide à la Villa Montmorency, visite qui donna l'occasion à Gide de lui offrir cet exemplaire (Brugmans, n°35).
