More than 300 years after its invention, the horological complication of 'repetition' is undimmed in its ability to amaze. Minute repeating watches tell the time both visibly and audibly. When the slide to the case side of the present watch is turned, the watch will 'repeat' the time. Using two coiled gongs at the edge of the movement, the watch will first chime the hours, on a gong of lower tonality, followed by the quarters past the hour which are indicated by the two internal hammers chiming first one gong and then the other in quick succession. Finally the minutes are chimed at speed by a hammer on the higher tone gong. The present example is notable for the superb quality and slim proportions of its movement. Slim watches were greatly favoured during the Art Deco period but the incorporation of such a complex movement into so a thin case was extremely challenging and could only be achieved by the finest watchmakers.
