描述

  • Chen Jiru

From now on, Dongpo jushi shall not have more than a cup of wine and a piece of meat for breakfast and dinner. When there is a respected visitor there shall be three servings. There can be less but not more. Hosts who summon me are hereby forewarned: if I disobey your wishes and pass, these are the reasons. First, contentment with what one already has creates good fortune. Second, an unfilled stomach nourishes one’s body. Third, reducing expense increases wealth. Dongpo jushi, sated with wine and food, leans on his desk. A clear stream flows on his right; white clouds circle on his left. In such a moment he feels as if he had some ideas, but also as if he had no ideas--as if he were a passive receptacle for the myriad things. Shame! Shame!
On a lone visit to a small pavilion, the rivers and mountains are silent. Releasing fish and birds, I have benefited life for eight, nine, ten years. With an earthenware bowl and wearing paperthin garment, I am content with my uselessness. Such is the Daoist way of life. Written at Tiaozhou Hut by Meigong Chen Jiru.
