Condition
The canvas has been laid on to a paper board, which is then backed with maisonite board. There is numerous horizontal cracks to the surface mainly to the cream coloured ground. There are also some virtical cracks towards to top and sides of this ground.

《霸王别姬》體現了林風眠和諧融合中西元素於美術創作的天賦。林風眠受二十世紀先鋒派前衞藝術運動（avant-garde movement）影響，將西方立體主義與中國民間皮影戲及剪紙藝術結合成畫。1951年，其開展了中國戲劇題材系列作品，描繪京劇人物。畫家將原來繁復的故事時序簡化為純粹的色塊構圖來交待故事情節、人物個性，而人物對白、姿態、神情則借用俐落流動的線條來詮釋，讓故事底蘊、動作變化、人格心態在靜美的畫面中成為永恆。畫家曾說：「我喜歡看電影和各種戲劇，不管演得好與壞，只要有形象、有動作、有變化，對我總是有趣的。」
見一描繪相關情景之作例，曾售於香港佳士得2004年4月25日，編號704。Helle 伉儷收藏，同出畫家之手的中國戲劇題材系列作品，包括《穆桂英掛帥》、《盜御馬》、《楊門女將》及《秋江》，曾售於香港蘇富比2009年4月6日，分別為編號521至524。
