of broad cylindrical form supported on three ruyi-shaped feet, deftly cast with a reticulated body of a dragon writhing among clouds reaching for a 'flaming' pearl, above a carp leaping over a tumultuous stream and a multi-storeyed pavilion in the distance, the reverse pierced with a small monkey clambering on a knotty pine among jagged rocks, beside a wutong tree, bamboo shoots and lingzhi sprigs sprouting in the foreground, all below a raised rim enshrouded with clouds, the base cast in relief with a coiled chilong, the bronze richly patinated to a lustrous chocolate-brown colour

A carp transforming into a dragon comes from the legend that on the third month of the spring, schools of carp would swim up the Yellow River to spawn. At a steep passage known as Dragon's Gate, the carp would have to leap up over the waterfall. Most of the fish would not succeed, but those who did transformed into dragons. The carp-dragon is symbolic of attaining success and were often bestowed to those studying for their civil service exams in hopes of passing.
