reasonably well hollowed, with a concave lip and a recessed, slightly concave foot surrounded by a protruding flattish footrim; the coral stopper carved with a chilong, with a separate coral collar

Condition
There is a hairline crack running from the foot up one main side of the bottle (showing on the illustration in the catalogue). The actual colour of the ground is a little warmer compared to the catalogue illustration.

Pure white coral snuff bottles are exceptionally rare and no other snuff bottle dating to the seventeenth to early twentieth century in known. A white coral 'tree' set in a jardinière of simulated rocks and other ground cover is known, and is recorded as having been presented to the Qianlong emperor from Guangzhou, see Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1987, p. 35, fig. 8.
