Condition
Apart from typical abrasions from use, there are a few small chips to the outer lip that are partially repolished, some still showing; there are several small nicks to the outer footrim similarly partially repolished; There are tiny nibbles to the rings of mask handles and tiny nibbles to the upper dragon's tail. Otherwise the overall condition is quite good. The actual colour of the stone is darker and of a deeper brown tone, less purple compared to the catalogue illustration.

The poem inscribed on the present bottle is the famous encomium, presumably by the Qianlong emperor, and customarily followed by the characters yuzhi ('by imperial command'). It appears on many duan stone bottles, often as the main decoration, but is not found on other wares carved from duan stone, suggesting that this group of bottles was especially commissioned to bear the poem, most likely in Guangzhou.
