Condition

Apart from some expected surface abrasions from use, there is a faint nick to the inner lip and one minute nick to the footrim, otherwise the snuff bottle is in very good condition. There is some slight fading of colours to the painting, but generally it is in good condition condition. The actual colours are consistent with the catalogue illustration.

In 1895, Ye Zhongsan demonstrated sufficient artistic confidence to begin emerging from the shadow of Zhou Leyuan's subject matter, which up until then had dominated his output.

The scene of the boy on the water buffalo on one side of the bottle is after similar scenes painted by Zhou Leyuan, such as an example in the Bloch collection, sold by Bonhams Hong Kong, 28th May 2010, lot 47. However, the subject on the other main side, showing a young woman partin curtains, displays Ye Zhongsan's growing confident and evolving personal style.
