The Hebrew inscriptions read: "For the Great Synagogue of London on the occasion of their visit, Michael the son of Alexander Segal and his wife Hana daughter of Aaron Levi [5]574 (1814);" and in large Hebrew script, "Moses' blessing to the tribe of Levi (Deuteronomy 33:8)." Both husband and wife are of Levitical descent and this gift was for the use of the Levites in the ritual washing of the priestly hands.
The Great Synagogue was established in Duke's Place, London in 1722, having moved from Broad Street, Mitre Square.
