Condition

This work is in excellent condition. There is evidence of artist’s pinholes at the lower corners of the work. There is one small accretion, 5 cm from the bottom edge and 17 cm from the left edge of the painting, presumably inherent to the artist’s working method.

郭柏川在畫面的構成上偏重於氣勢的經營,這也是他對東方精神的詮釋,其靜物作品多採用俯視的角度,表現水果、魚蝦、螃蟹等,構圖十分突出,藉以全盤掌握畫面結構的經營。」國立台灣博物館館長黃才郎對於郭拍川靜物作品的評論,正好反映在《皮刀魚》之上。

郭柏川對於藝術創作的基礎非常重視,即便1933年在東京美術學校以優異成績畢業,依然未曾自滿,反而繼續埋首於素描及繪畫材料研究。他把各種色彩調配在畫布上,並註明日期,觀察五年後的變化結果,由此掌握色彩歷久常新之道。1937至1948年間,郭柏川旅居北平,先後執教於北平師範大學、北平藝專及京華藝術學校,並與黃賓虹時有來往。透過親炙黃賓虹收藏之古代書畫,藝術家發現宣紙作品能經歷數百年而保持狀態完好,由此啟發他以此為材創作油畫,成為他的畢生藝術主軸。為免出現日久發黃的現象,郭柏川開創出極為清新富麗的用色風格,成為個人特徵,正如完成於1971年的《皮刀魚》,其嫣紅與青藍之色在今日仍然明艷動人,藝術家駕馭色彩之功力,在此表露無遺。
