This work is in excellent condition. The canvas is revealed 7 cm in length near the bottom left corner of the work. There is no evidence of restoration under UV.

在當下活躍的中國畫家之中,羅中立是鄉土寫實主義的代表,其憑藉四川美術學院院長的身份,將該院校一手打造成中國鄉土寫實主義之基地。羅中立在八○年代以《父親》震撼畫壇,其創作養份源自早年川、渝之間的鄉土生活,煥發質樸、原始的生命力。
1984年,藝術家遠赴比利時皇家美術學院進修,比利時在古代與荷蘭合稱「法蘭德斯」(Flanders),自文藝復興時期已經與南方的義大利分庭抗禮,孕育出許多優秀畫家,其中最能打動羅中立、對他影響最深者,依然是緊貼群眾生活的老布哲爾(Pieter Bruegel the Elder )、梵高(Vincent Van Gogh),以及法國的米勒(Jean-Francois Millet),並啟發他從已有的照相寫實主義技巧上再闢新途,開創具有個人風格,同時更具表現性、更能反映鄉土生活的藝術語言。
《雨後》的題材貫徹羅中立歸國後的成熟畫風,他從最尋常的農村生活中捕捉靈感,深深挖掘出潛藏在內的澎湃情感與力量。畫中男子一絲不掛,在夕陽中渡河而歸,儘管只能望見其背影,但他頭頂包袱,一手持杖的身軀,充份說明了平凡鄉民的生活條件。藝術家沒有走向渲染悲情或刻意歌頌的兩極,而是含蓄地透過粗糙的肌膚、厚實的肩背、突出的脊樑、緊握的雙手,錘煉出人物堅忍不拔的鬥志,逆照而來的陽光,有如發自內心的一道光環,而他身旁的小狗與岸上的小鳥,象徵與自然為伴的生活並不孤單,而那一片赤紅的主色調,更把河水照躍得沸騰,教觀眾亦能感受身在其中的熱度,具強烈表現主義色彩。被西方視為表現主義先軀的梵谷(Vincent van Gogh),同樣在作品中表現對於貧苦大眾的關愛,若以兩者作品相較,可見羅中立滿懷熱情的創作動力。
