郭柏川─裸女
郭柏川一生周遊於東京、北京、台南,此番經歷在中國早期油畫家之中殊為獨特。郭柏川1901年生於台灣,自二○年代起遊學日本,期間進入東京美術學校,並以優秀成績畢業,及至1937年移居北平,展開十二年的教學與創作生涯,除了徜徉於古都的深厚文化,亦結交了一代名宿黃賓虹及梅原龍三郎等,確立畢生創作觀念。即使在抗戰時期,藝術家依然秉持氣節,在淪陷區拒絕投敵,堅持以獨立精神作育英才;1948年,藝術家回歸台南,此後不但在成功大學執教長達二十年,亦一手創建了「台南美術研究會」,對南台灣的藝術發展不遺餘力。憑藉豐富的大陸經驗,郭柏川的作品在一眾台灣油畫家之中別具個性,黃賓虹曾譽之曰「戛然獨造,純任自然」,是藝術史上一位重要先行者。

與林風眠、徐悲鴻等第一代油畫家相同,郭柏川的作品致力融和中西,主張「書法入西畫,古意創新機」,而其裸女題材則顯示其對於藝術純粹性之堅持。早在留學日本時期,藝術家已經專攻人體,而不取較易獲得優勢的台灣風情,以爭取入選當地官辦最高規格的「帝展」;及後在台灣發展,面對保守的社會風氣,他依然無懼困難,致力於人體在畫面上的完美呈現。藝術家曾經指出:「一斤綿花、一斤鐵,面積雖然不一樣,但分量卻是相同的!」反應了他把握畫面量感的原則。《裸女》所表現的重點不在人物細節,而是人體所呈現的神韻姿態和動感,其併攏屈曲的雙腿與輕擱額頭的雙臂,構成了畫面橫向高低起伏之動線,膝蓋、臀部、胸部和雙肘,成為動線轉折之關鍵,亦是藝術家最重視、並稱為「點絕」之部份,栩栩如真的力量感和生命力,亦由此產生。
