寫生是吳冠中的創作基石,在留學法國期間,藝術家已經穿梭於巴黎的大街小巷寫生,鍛練出紮實的速寫技巧,歸國之後,他更將巴黎的藝術種子投入中國土地,發展出自己的獨特風格。儘管照片能夠作為油畫創作的參考,吳冠中卻認為速寫才是作品的胚胎,具有獨立的藝術價值。他曾經指出:「速寫寫形、寫神、寫情,捕捉素材,捕捉感受,捕捉構思、構圖。慧眼識美醜,作者在蕪雜的物象中提取美之精靈,須動手術,移花接木,移山倒海。速寫似乎是我的手術刀,我的構思與構圖,多半是先在速寫中成形。」
《石塘山下人家》以硬筆速寫融合彩墨呈現眼前風景,透過粗、細兩種筆觸,構建出鄉村人家與崇山峻嶺。以幾何形狀為主的前景刻劃入微,組成幾種或整齊、或參差的石壁,並簡潔、準確地捕捉白牆黑瓦的民居特徵;以線條勾勒為主的背景則率性馳騁,塑造出高聳崢嶸的自然地勢,兩者對比強烈。儘管速寫確立了畫面構圖,其彩墨著色卻並不囿於線條框架,而是隨興之所致點染漫塗,半透明的銀灰賦予山的厚重,亦點綴了前景石壁,而紛繽奪目的青、黃、紅、橘諸色,更是神來之筆,既象徵了鄉村裡的人間氣息,亦指涉了山上的草木生機,一派閒適自在。
