Little is known about the sculptor Duchoiselle, except that he supplied ceiling reliefs for the Louvre and Garnier's Paris Opera in 1882. Other examples of these models were produced in marble by the Frilli Gallery, Florence. The exoticized American Indian figures, intended as personifications of America, were popular nineteenth century subjects for both American and European sculptors.
