Condition
STRUCTURE
The canvas has been firmly relined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for what appears to be an old circular repair in the upper right parallel to the elder girls head, as is visible in the catalogue illustration. Elsewhere the modelling appears a little flat in places particularly in the darker pigments of the costumes - an effect of the relining. Otherwise the painting appears to be in good stable condition with a discolourd varnish overall in keeping with the paintings age.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms both the opacity of the varnish as well as the aforementioned damage. It also reveals scattered retouching throughout. The most recent campaign appears to be concentrated in the upper half of the canvas, particularly to what looks like an old horizontal canvas crease running for approx. 20 in. in the upper centre which passes directly below the younger girls nose. There is also more recent infilling to the craquelure, in the chests, hands and faces however beyond this extensive examination is impeded by the varnish.
FRAME
Held in a grand carved wood gilt frame.
