Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. There is evidence of a thick discoloured varnish overall. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the opacity of the varnish and reveals very little evidence of retouching. There is some very minor retouching in the lower left and some very minor infilling to craquelure by the horses foremost foot. Apart from that there is again some very minor retouching to two small knocks, each measuring approx. ½in. by the upper part of the the backmost hind leg and directly below the horse's abdomen, parallel to the hooves. Otherwise though the picture is in remarkably good condition. FRAME Held in a plaster and gilt wood frame.
