描述
- Thomas Spencer
- Portrait of a Gentleman, traditionally identified as Fulwar, 4th Earl of Craven, on his hunter
- oil on canvas
Condition
STRUCTURE
The canvas has been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in very good condition. There is some scattered retouching to the sky, predominantly to the left. There is also a fine uneven craquelure overall and evidence of a discoloured varnish.
ULTRAVIOLET
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms both the opacity of the varnish and the aforementioned retouching in the sky. There is evidence of previous campaigns of retouching however the thick varnish makes further inspection difficult. The more recent retouching is minor and mainly to the landscape and in the lower centre there is some minor infilling to craquelure.
FRAME
Held in a dark wood frame.

Fulwar, 4th Earl of Craven, was the son of William 2nd Earl of Craven and his wife Elizabeth Skipwith. Lord Craven is shown in two paintings by James Seymour, sold in the celebrated Craven Sale at Sotheby's on 27th November 1968, lots 118 and 119. Another version of this portrait, signed and dated 1754, was advertised in the Burlington Magazine for February 1969.
