Condition

The work is in good condition overall, as is the canvas. There are some minor craquelures, particularly on the lower right (yellow impastos), but the paint layers and impastos are well preserved. There are two minute spots of paint loss on the background of the lower left corner. The colours of the paint are very vibrant in reality and the texture is more obviously tactile on the real painting. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals no indication of retouching. Framed.

阿凡迪(Affandi)的《吃西瓜的自畫像》(Self Portrait, Eating Watermelon)生氣勃勃、扣人心弦,是畫家情感色彩最重的作品之一。濃厚的顏料覆於畫布之上,不僅極具說服力,更滿盈抒情之意。在紅、綠、黃、白和黑五種基本色調下,畫面活靈活現,揮舞著青春繁茂的生命力。阿凡迪一向注重皮囊下的內心世界,如同此畫像所承載著畫家的精神與心靈。

他巨大的腦袋佔據大幅畫面,深紅色的顱骨和額頭尤其突出。然而與其他自畫像不同,這裡阿凡迪雙手捧著一大塊西瓜,遮住了他的臉龐。西瓜是阿凡迪最愛的水果,不止一次出現在他的作品中。1962年,他的好友蘇加那·克爾頓(Sudjana Kerton)更畫下阿凡迪欣喜吃瓜的模樣。這幅畫中,瓜肉之色鮮明熾紅,不難想像大快朵頤其鮮甜可口之痛快。

阿凡迪所作的自畫像在現代東南亞藝術中極具意義。早在三十年代末,他已開始在這領域探索,當時印尼的藝術展還並不為一般本地人開放,阿凡迪藉自畫像驕傲地告訴世人他的身份和愛國之心。現在,他的畫像已不再僅是外觀,而是那存在於人類本性最根本的精神。
