This work is in good condition overall. The canvas is clean and sound. There is minor wear and handling on the edges, but the paint layers are well-preserved and stable. Under ultraviolet light inspection there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

A master of the gestural brushstroke, Blanco renders a composition that is at once maternal and sensual in a few bold strokes. From its coloration to its painterliness, Balinese Woman with Child is a celebration of the lush tropics and all its splendour. Featuring, uniquely, an old Balinese script, the words translate to, “A Balinese woman is travelling with her child in the summer. Noticing that he’s hungry and how scorching the weather is, she buys a bowl of grass jelly drink and finds shelter under the wood tree so that her breast milk will cool down and she can feed her son.” Blanco’s interpretation of the “Mother and Child” archetype is profoundly endearing and stands apart as the only known kind among his oeuvre.
