Condition

The painting is in good condition overall, as is the canvas. There are indications of minor wear and handling around the margin, along with associated minute paint losses on the edges of the canvas. However the paint layers and brush works are well-preserved. Examination under ultraviolet light showed a minor retouching on the figure's breast. In reality the painting is illustrated with a blue window on the right register, which was mistakenly cropped out (2 ½ in.). This work is accompanied with the artist's original frame.

“When I arrived in Tahiti, I was very disappointed that the culture I had dreamed about no longer existed there, but I did observe the components that Gauguin had used to build up his beautiful paintings. He showed me tropical Nature, and this influenced me so enormously that I began looking for a place where perhaps more culture had survived, but in the same natural setting. That place was Bali. There I was shaped, and became what I am today.”
