Condition

The sculpture is in good condition. There is evidence of some light dust accretions in the crevices, and indications of wear and handling around the corners, as is consistent with its age, but the overall condition of the art work is good and sound.

莫克塔(But Mochtar)畢業於印尼的萬隆科技學院,其後在1960年和1961年分別往美國羅德島設計學院及紐約雕塑中心學習雕塑,更在1961年至1963年期間在麻省理工學院進行研究。回國後,他在1984年成為日惹的印尼藝術學院第一任校長。莫克塔不愧為當時最受敬重的現代主義者。

《家庭》(Hubungan Keluarga)中有力的主題『家』是莫克塔最具標誌性的題材。可能因為與妻子求子不易,他有不少以家庭為單元的作品。此作本被考慮製成一個大型版本,於第八屆世界林業大會中獻給印尼林業局,但考慮實際操作角度,最終莫克塔在採取同一基礎結構下,以緊湊葉子圖案取代了原設計的線條元素。

莫克塔最成功的雕塑是頗為抽象的,以其具實在觸感的表面及棱角轉折之形見稱。此作以相互緊扣的幾何形狀及那些從空隙中延伸的線條和五根支撐腿組成,它們交叉重疊,緊密而有機地聯繫在一起,十分出色。

莫克塔的雕塑作品展現了他對西方現代主義美學的充分認識,從賈科梅蒂的坑窪人像到亨利·摩爾的柔美構造,都很受他欣賞。《家庭》作於七十年代,體現了藝術家一向採用的平衡建築結構。作品表質顯得被風化、侵蝕並簡化,然而堅固的造型有力地支撐這表面的脆弱,表現出作品的韌力。在莫克塔漫長的藝術生涯中,家庭一直扮演重要角色,《家庭》恰恰彰顯了這種堅韌不拔的核心價值觀。
