Condition
The work is in good condition overall. There are scattered spots of small paint losses throughout, most notably on the lower left quadrant and center area (on the horse) with craquelures. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals scattered areas of retouching along the corners, edges and margins, particularly on the lower left and upper right corners. Framed, under Plexiglas.

René Bassouls graduated from the prestigious Institution of Travel Painters in France. Alike many travel painters René Bassouls shares the same love for Vietnam with artists such as, Gaston Roullet, Henry Vollet, Louis Rollet and Henri Mege. They traveled around the world and documented the unique aesthetics of the different cultures and landscapes they engross themselves to.
This present Lot 283 was executed in the year of 1927, during his visit to the Northern Region of Vietnam. René Bassouls’s curiosity to Vietnamese culture and history clearly shows the unique period of the 20th century. Through the quality of the artist’s work, this documentation marks a significant admiration and acceptance of his surroundings. In Une Procession en Indochine (A Procession in Indochina), Bassouls was able to explore space by selecting his composition carefully. The vivid flairs denote the energetic soul of the Northern Region of Vietnam’s religious procession with expressive styles, drawing the viewers to the magical atmosphere of the celebration.
