C.J. Tañedo’s paintings are inspired by the photographs of his portraits. Transforming the snapshot onto canvas, Tañedo has used the l’oeil technique to imitate the expression, ambiance and natural light captured on camera.

Inspired by the impressionist artist William Waterhouse, Tañedo is charmed by the subject’s body language and porcelain skin. Set in one of Manila’s oldest building, a young lady seated on the edge of the window wearing a delicate tutu skirt is observing through the window glass, while gently placing her hands against it. This painting in particular, is a unique representation of Tañedo’s curiosity towards composition and palette.

In Window Pane, Tañedo confirms his commitment to reveal the hidden language of the human mind through a dreamy and innocent gaze, albeit, articulating the reflection of his portrait’s mood and expression. The lady is painted in pastel hues, highlighting her presence against the white backdrop and mimicking the radiance which surrounds her. A poetry scripted faintly around the margin of the canvas, marks the artist’s dialogue between the subject and viewer. A poetic ambience imbues the image with romanticism, which was aptly captured by the artist’s technique.
