These plates are from a group of Frankenthal wares made as either additions or replacements for the 222-piece Sèvres porcelain dinner service presented by Louis XV to Carl Theodor, the elector of the Palatinate, in 1760, a dish from which is illustrated by Pierre Verlet et al in Sèvres, p. 207, pl. 41. A similar pair of plates were sold in these rooms, October 11, 1995, lot 219.
