Frontispiece:
A landscape painting by Huang Jinghou after a work of the divine class by Juran. Inscribed by Wu Huayuan of Mohuangge.
Artist's inscription:
On the twentieth day of the third month in the dingweiyear (April 11, 1727) of the Yongzheng reign, stopping at Daguan's Pavilion for Sighting Mountains, I painted this after Dong Beiyuan's (Dong Yuan, ?-approx.962) Miraculous Peaks of Ten Thousand Trees. Tangyang daoren Huang Ding.
Colophon:
The Imperial Painting Catalogue of the Xuanhe Era records that 'Dong Beiyuan's Miraculous Peaks of Ten Thousand Trees was his first endeavor. The brushwork is majestic, with a lofty and dramatic force. The layered mountains and precipitous cliffs are startling and gripping. The same can be said for the present painting. The brushwork here is vigorous, the use of ink plain and antique. Complete in spirit and life-force, this painting is beyond the dreams of my contemporaries, and those who recognize its quality should treasure it. Inscribed by Danzhai Hu Tongxia.
