題跋:
〈顧〉羅貫中客霸府張士誠所,作水滸傳,題曰「忠義水滸」。後之讀其書者,艷草竊為義烈,稱盜賊為英傑,仲尼之徒不道桓文,貫中何居焉?孟子曰:「誦其詩,讀其書,不知其人可乎?」,是以論其世也。至正失馭,甚於趙宋,士誠跳梁,劇於宋江,水滸之作,以為士誠諷諫也,士誠不察。而三百年之後,高杰李定國之徒,聞風興起,始於盜賊,歸於忠義,未必非貫中之教也。山陰陳洪綬畫水滸圖像,值崇正之末年,有貫中之心焉。其筆法仿唐人〈五星二十八宿真形圖〉,傳稱宋江等為星辰降靈故也。嗚呼!諸人往矣。英雄邪群盜邪,以其時考之,則可矣。己亥(1719)修禊日,東吳顧苓跋。

〈曹〉昔施耐庵感時政之陵夷,假宋趙之故事作〈水滸傳〉,都七十回,首卷以王進去而高俅用寓豺狼當道之旨,故以豹子頭林冲作引,迨後羅貫中客於偽吳,遂續成一百二十回,欲以諷士誠,故有招安之說。陳章侯生當天崇之世,一則逆閹內訌;一則流賊外擾,感憤之意託諸丹青,亦耐庵、貫中志也。
世傳章侯所作圖像止四十人,貫華堂中摹入者,即其本也。第圖內無章侯款識,即作贊之人僅有「葦窗」印記,亦不詳為何人?豈以盜賊之像,不值留姓氏耶!觀崑山顧氏跋語,知為章侯所作。然無是跋,具眼者亦能辨為章侯筆墨也。且閒道人書後。

〈周〉嘗謂有學識人,雖小小遊戲筆墨,皆能有根據,有關系。老蓮高材亮節,其圖象直奪顧、陸之席,迺浪費煙墨圖寫此四十人,不解意何所取?及觀顧雲美氏與且閒道人兩跋,始悉當日作書源流,與老蓮此圖皆頗具苦心。古人主文譎谏,不是過也。雲美,國初人,與老蓮同時,博學清才,尤工金石、篆刻,甚自矜重。且閒未識何許人,審其筆趣,亦非凡品,俟考之。同治六年(1867)秋九月望後一日,燈下展閱,有感於近事,嘅然書此。長沙自道人甫識。

粵西冦起,我楚南以曾相國唱義,糾旅卒,戕大難,成中興之業。而其時,英賢陷賊中者,被招安效用於國者不少,甚有積功至大帥,竟能奮勇立功,慷慨蹈義。英雄之生於末世,惟在遇不遇,絣綳絖之藥,只為不口手用耳,而能者迺用以封侯。觀於此圖,益信古人不予欺。同治十年辛未(1871)冬十月旬有二日,燈下展此再識。自翁周壽昌。

〈程〉陳章侯〈水滸圖像〉四十幀,分裝二冊,各系以名號像贊,小楷雋逸,出入晉、唐,蓋其自課合作,鋟木藁本,縱無款印,其高古奇駭,形神兼備,迥非時史所能逮也。鄧孝威大書「遲翁妙繪」四字於冊首,顧雲美、且閒道人、周自庵跋於後。
鄧,泰州人,康熙已未(1715)召試博學鴻詞,以年老授官正字回籍,洽聞廣見,有〈詩觀過嶺集〉。

顧,長洲人,存仁後,文柟甥,明末諸生。潛心篆隸,精鑒金石碑版,兼工篆刻,得外家文氏之傳。居虎丘山塘,自闢塔影園室,懸莊烈帝御書,時肅衣冠再拜,欷歔太息,亦殷頑之流亞也。有〈塔影園稿〉。跋中稱此畫於崇禎之末,時章侯年四十有六。跋於己亥(1659),則章侯為土中人,殆七稔矣。又謂其筆法仿唐人〈五星二十八宿真形圖〉,則雲美嘗見真本於茅子鴻許,故云,見顧氏〈卜居集〉。

且閒道人為曹垂燦,號曹,字天祺,上海人。順治丁亥(1647)進士,官遂安知縣,所居曰:「且閒亭」,以詩名見〈清詩別裁〉。

周壽昌,長沙人,字應甫,一字荇農,晚號自菴。道光進士,由編修累遷內閣學士,兼禮部侍郎。光緒初,罷官居京師,以著述為事。詩文、書畫俱負重名。尤精鑒別,富藏庋。光緒甲申(1884)卒,年七十有一。

收傳印記若「謝林邨珍藏書畫印」,乃謝淞洲鈐記。
謝字滄湄,號林邨,長洲人。工畫,得元四家意趣,精於鑒古,清世宗召入內府,出所藏,命其鑒別,一一不爽,世宗善之。兼工詩,以天趣為貴,不加鏤琢,如其畫焉。

它若「春皋秘玩」,為喬晉芳藏印。喬字心農,號春皋,山西聞喜人。道光乙未(1835)探花,工書。「染雲莊」為曾志樸女史室名。曾,閩崇安人,適武進莊氏,清道、同間。工花卉、寫真。其母沈瑴,嘉興人,適崇安曾氏,善畫梅,亦工山水。

或謂章侯雅擅丹青,不為麒麟凌煙,而顧有取乎綠林豪客,論者病之。維時臲卼,萑苻遍野,生靈塗炭,章侯蒿目世艱,惻然憂之,而文士畫人,既不能障百川而迴狂瀾,亦維以生動傳神之筆,發為水滸群雄之像,不啻屈子之賦〈離騷〉,此其所以一作而數作也。夫噫,良工苦心,有足多已。辛亥(1971)寎月,新安程琦書於絳雪簃。

Gu Ling: Luo Guanzhong, who lodged with the warlord Zhang Shicheng, subtitled his novel Water Margin “loyalty and righteousness.” Later readers of this work thus admired petty thieves as righteous and praised bandits as heroes. Confucius’s disciples did not talk about the conduct of the sage kings Heng of Qi and Wen of Jin. Where does Guanzhong rank? Mencius said, “Chanting the ancients’ poetry and reading their books, but failing to know their characters - is this acceptable? Thus we must consider their backgrounds and times.” The chaos of the Zhizheng reign was more severe than that at the end of the Song, and Shicheng’s opportunism was worse than Song Jiang’s. Water Margin was in truth a satire of Shicheng, but Shicheng did not realize this. Three centuries later, the likes of Gao Jie and Li Dingguo rose with the times, beginning as thieves and robbers but ending in loyalty and righteousness. They may indeed have learnt from Guozhong. Chen Hongshou of Shanyin painted the characters of Water Margin during the end of the Chongzhen reign, and surely shared Guanzhong’s intentions. It is said that he modeled his brushwork after the Tang painting True Aspects of the Five Planets and Twenty-eight Lunar Lodges because Song Jiang and the other heroes are spirits of celestial bodies descended on earth. Alas, they are all of the past. Heroes? Bandits? It is enough to consider them according to their times. On the Purification Day of the jihai year (1719). Inscribed by Gu Ling of Dongwu.

Zhou Shouchang: In autumn on the sixteenth day of the ninth month of the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign (October 16, 1867), I unrolled this painting under lamplight. Moved by recent affairs, I write this with a sigh. Inscribed by Zidaoren Pu of Changsha.
