- Silk bears a tanning tone due to age.
- Restorations and stain spots can be found here and there on the calligraphy.
- Three major ink losses can be found, one located at the top center with a size of 3.5 X 4 cm, the other two located at the bottom left corner with sizes 7 X 8 cm and 6 X 5 cm.
- The illustrated color appears to be more intense than that of the actual piece.

註：金農的書法，面貌多樣，常見大致可歸結為四種。其一漆書，將字之點畫，由中鋒變為偏鋒書寫，橫畫粗曠而直畫細長，蒼厚古穆，有如漆帚，時留飛白。其二隸書，得力於〈夏承〉〈華山廟〉兩碑，結體呈扁形，泯去筆頭之鋒作書，波磔不揚，行筆凝重，具濃鬱金石氣。其三小楷，以濃墨下筆，楷中寓行，自然灑脫，有如滿紙珠璣，別開生面，其內容多為自作詩與題跋。齊白石早年學此，幾乎亂真。其四在楷、隸間，借鑑魏碑，運鋒豐潤，結體方整，「以拙為妍，以重為巧」，內容多抄錄前人傳記、文章。這類作品立軸偏多，多不署年款，如天津市文物公司藏〈隸書程堂傳〉軸。
本幅亦屬此類。通觀此軸，字字飽滿，含蓄凝練，拙而不呆，毫無一絲怠筆。「六十不出翁」一印，極為少見，考故宮藏〈錄陶秀實清異錄軸〉，亦鈐有「金農印信」與「六十不出翁」兩印。該軸作於乾隆八年（1743），冬心時年五十七歲。另，重慶市博物館藏有〈錄陸友墨史冊〉，署款為：「六十不出翁金農」，是冊作於乾隆七年（1742），書風與本幅接近，祗是更為娟秀圓潤，未如本幅之蒼勁厚重。由此推斷，本幅則應創作於一七四三至四五年間。
