This finely cast bronze vessel is after late Shang and early Western Zhou period archaic ding; for examples, see one in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Bronzes in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1999, pl. 86, standing on closely related bird-form feet; and the late Shang dynasty bronze fangding, its legs cast as birds standing on their long tails, illustrated in Ancient Chinese Bronzes from the Stoclet and Wessén Collections, Eskenazi London, 1975, cat. nos. 2.
The decoration of exaggerated flanges and stylised beasts in high relief, which appear to float on the leiwen ground, are particularly noteworthy, making the present vessel exceptional amongst archaistic vessels of this type. See a related bronze ding sold in our New York rooms, 17th March 2009, lot 76; a censer of this type standing on four closely related bird-form legs illustrated in The Second Bronze Age. Later Chinese Metalwork, London, 1991, pl. 52; and another fangding offered at Christie's Hong Kong, 31st October 2000, lot 1001.
