of slender baluster form, the rounded sides rising from a flat base to a waisted neck and a galleried rim, boldly decorated around the exterior in painterly strokes of cobalt with two phoenix in flight among lotus and peony scrolls, one swooping down, the other floating in midair, with outstretched wings and long curling tail feathers, their plumage finely picked out with 'heaping and pilling', all between a band of pendent lappets containing ruyi at the shoulder and overlapping plantains surrounding the base, the neck further decorated with plantain between a border of pointed scroll-leaves encircling the shoulder and a blue fillet at the rim, the base unglazed, Japanese wood box

Condition
The neck of the vase slightly leans to one side. A 1.5 by 3 cm C-shaped area of the exterior of the mouth has been restored with repainting and re-spray, probably to a shallow flake to the rim. There are some kiln grits to the exterior of the vase which has been polished down. There are also some minor fritting to the rim, burst air bubbles, as well as some potting and firing flaws such as kiln grits and iron spots to the base.
