carved with a curved bulbous head, gently tapering to a pointed tip, the side inscribed with the characters gong (palace) and shier (twelve), the material darkening from an amber color to dark brown towards the tip

Condition
The hairpin is in good condition. There are some traces of old gilding inside the engraved mark.

此明朝犀角髮簪，樸雅端莊，觀其尺寸，可見犀角原材巨大。犀角製簪極為罕見，本品器身書「宮十二」三字，想必為故時後宮專用。
相類犀角髮簪，可參見一枝十七世紀簪，頂端飾梅花，略較本品短，載於霍滿堂，《中國犀角雕刻珍賞》，香港，1999年，頁246，編號184。另有一枝高浮雕犀角髮簪，精雕細作，器身上部枝葉簡練茁壯，梅花盛放，售於香港佳士得2010年5月30日，編號1829。
