the well-polished horn of chestnut color, realistically carved and detailed as a furled lotus leaf, tied with a ribbon to stalks of lotus blossoms, millet, prunus and reeds, the tied stalks bending upwards and undercut to form an openwork base and the handle, the interior finely incised with veins and decorated with a fish and three snails carved in high relief, wood stand

Condition
The leaf is in good condition with only a small chip to the edge of one petal of an attendant bud in front on the outside. There are a few expected minor nicks or tiny bruises to the edges of some of the carved deocration or cup rim but overall the condition of the horn is very good and it is polished to a fine patina.

此盃呈蓮葉式,雕工精巧深刻,器壁裏外葉脈清晰,器形大方雅致,乃明代犀角雕刻藝術之逸品。盃內飾三隻蝸牛、一尾小魚盤桓葉上,神態逼真生動。蓮葉為角雕常見裝飾圖式之一,此品雖多採經典造型紋樣,然上綴蝸牛游魚躍於盃壁,莖葉纏於盃底並向上蜿蜒直入盃口,自然成柄之巧妙設計,匠心獨具。
全盃圖紋寓意吉祥,以「禾」草、「荷」葉,象徵「和諧連年」,有追求萬物和諧、生機盎然之喻。荷葉象徵純淨脫俗之美,與品性高潔、超越俗世的文人理想相符。魚與蝸牛亦是豐裕富足之兆。
香港仇炎之與仇大雄舊藏相類角雕一只,圖見《Craving for Carvings: Rhinoceros Horn from the Chow Collection》,亞洲文明博物館,新加坡,2005年,編號fc11,該品於2011年4月8日香港蘇富比售出,編號2715。另有一相類例子,與此品甚似,也飾兩莖自器底延伸至盃口成柄,原屬 Murray 珍藏,後捐贈予倫敦維多利亞與艾伯特博物館,見 Craig Clunas,《Chinese Carving》,倫敦,1996年,圖31。2005年7月13日倫敦蘇富比亦售出類品一件,編號105。
