南瓜是草間彌生早期迷幻藝術國度中的重要主題，並遍及其雕塑、裝置及畫作，並公認為藝術家的最為強烈的自身寫照，及當代藝術中最為人熟悉的符號之一。今次拍賣中的《南瓜》展現草間彌生最負盛名的視覺密碼,以無窮反覆圓點譜出韻律,與其名作《無限的網》一脈相連。作品中，黃色背景上配上黑色的圓點，顏色鮮明，對比強烈，是藝術家常用的創作手法，並見於其他的綜合媒材作品上。南瓜雕塑的有機線條，展現草間彌生對神祕而弔詭的大自然的執迷。
據草間彌生所述，她對南瓜的迷戀始於祖父的農場。「我撥開一排一排的百日草把手伸進去摸，把南瓜從莖上拔下來。這時候，南瓜突然活過來開始跟我說話。剛摘下來的南瓜帶著露水，泛著濕潤的光，那種可愛的觸感，真是筆墨難以形容。」南瓜主題作品最早出
現於1940年末，當時草間彌生正在京都市立美術工藝學校（後來改名為京都市立日吉吉丘高中）學習日本畫，迄今逾六十載，她的南瓜作品不僅已臻成熟，遍佈於世界不同角落的畫廊及美術館，而且更已成為現今最成功日本女藝術家的偉大創作精神。
