陳庭詩出生於福建長樂一個官宦世家，自幼獲良好的傳統教育。他在八歲的時候因意外失聰及失瘖，此後開始學習水墨，日後並以版畫創作為主軸，踏上藝術之路。他於1959年創立「中國現代版畫會」，同年其作品開始連續獲選參展五屆巴西「聖保羅雙年展」。1965年，他加入以推展現代藝術為誌的「五月畫會」，而他所發表的版畫和鐵雕作品亦屢獲國際大獎。其版畫作品早期以甘蔗版為材，以帶有金石韻味的線條為特色，結合西方抽象主義，刻劃出具備東方神韻的藝術符號，他的作品中常出現圓形的圖識，象徵著日月星辰、陰陽變易，表現中國獨特的宇宙觀以外，亦為古典文化賦予嶄新的現代意義。
