早在中國明代，四川自流井和貢井地區經已產鹽，憑幾個工人腳踏杠杆就可以鑿出千米的深井，當中究竟運用了何種技術，至今仍為不解之謎。抗戰時期，日軍使用斷鹽戰略，試圖癱瘓中國軍民的作戰能力，而四川的自貢鹽井，便成為支持舉國食鹽供應的要埠。孫明經的照片，把民國鹽井的開鑿過程完整保留，為歷史也為未來，留下了實實在在可以永遠看得見的畫卷。
