This work is overall in very good condition. There are minor paint losses at the middle bottom.
There is no evidence of restoration under UV light.

寫實主義畫家姜國芳的「紫禁城系列」，洋溢濃厚的歷史浪漫色彩。雖然畫家表示作品內容與真人實事無涉，但畫中的場景卻處處滲透著耳熟能詳的氣息，對現為中央戲劇學院教授的作者來說，此為其藉歷史為背景，盡情釋放創造力的成果。
相較於其他同樣以舊中國為題材的寫實類作品，姜國芳的繪畫特別有戲劇張力，以及舞台效果。所謂戲劇張力，是指畫面的場景和人物安排有嚴謹的故事性，能輕易引發聯想；而舞台效果，則由其善於調度光線和色彩，烘染出強烈的氣氛，讓觀者聚焦的特色可見。《玉妃寒雀圖》以女性為題，揭開神秘的宮闈生活，畫中的妃子背對觀眾，隱閉手足，肢體語言保守，僅透過回頭遠望表露情緒，在壓抑之中營造出韻味。同時間為了不使氣氛過於沉重，畫家把光線和服飾調節成一片溫暖的金黃，主角以外的背景和道具，則刻意融進漆黑之中，這種做法，有如舞台上經常使用的「追光」，亦令人想起荷蘭繪畫大師林布蘭的「光影強化」（chiaroscuro）技巧，使作品主題更為突出奪目。
