This work is overall in very good condition. There is a slight abrasion on the extreme left of the top border. There is a paint chip near the middle left and middle of the right border. There is a paint loss near the bottom left. There is no evidence of restoration under UV light.

道家精神的藝術感悟

中國諸子百家之中，以道家最具藝術氣質，如《莊子》內篇七篇，便完全是以觀賞天地之心，闡述宇宙變化的哲學。在朱德群的作品中，水墨和書法固然是表現元素，但作為形而上的精神元素，道家思想其實一直佔據了重要席位，唯其如此，他的作品才顯得內涵豐瞻，歷久彌新，隨著歲月累積，這種養份更如同佳釀，愈為真醇。90年代朱德群在思想上更到達了圓融無礙之境，《不可名狀之二》所反映的，正是他反璞歸真的成就。

遁入宇宙的墨意空間

「不可名狀」典出《老子》第十四章：「繩繩不可名，復歸於無物，是謂無狀之狀，無物之象」，其最原始的解釋，即是宇宙的本質。朱德群的作品，素以明亮的光彩為特徵，但在此作上，他卻以濃郁深邃的墨綠色彩佔據觀眾視覺，這不是藝術家刻意求新，而是其精神感悟已然進入另一境界，若明鏡止水、淵渟嶽峙但寧靜中，卻不掩生機勃勃，而宇宙的混沌若在中間呈蚌殼狀開展，五彩繽紛的寶石光華隨即激射而出，藝術家數十年來累積的大智大美，如獲昇華。道生一，一生二，二生三，三生萬物，《不可名狀之二》以最單純的色彩對比，不露形相地展現東方的宇宙哲學，而朱德群在歐洲所吸收的抽象主義精華，亦在此發揮得淋漓盡致。
