Adventurous modern art leader
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, founded in 1874, is the largest museum of modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands. The world-renowned collection comprises 100,000 objects dating from 1870 to the present, with major works representing such movements as Bauhaus, De Stijl, CoBrA, neo-impressionism, abstract expressionism, pop art, minimal art and conceptual art, with noted artists including Kazimir Malevich, Vincent van Gogh, Francis Bacon, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. The Stedelijk offers a dynamic experience of modern art and design, and explores complex topics, often in dialogue with artists, through a leading program of temporary exhibitions. In 2012, the museum completed a major renovation adding an eye-catching, futuristic wing nicknamed the “Bathtub.” This extension has greatly increased the museum’s exhibition space and helped to raise its international profile.
