World-famous home of the Baroque genius
Once the residence of renowned artist Peter Paul Rubens, the Rubenshuis (currently closed) is an Italian-style villa with a charming courtyard and garden, designed by Rubens himself. In the 17th century, the complex served as Ruben’s bustling workshop and private studio, a gathering place for distinguished visitors, a cherished family home and a showcase for his treasured art collection. Interest in transforming the house into a monument emerged in the 19th century, but it was not until 1937 the the city of Antwerp acquired the property and began restorations, finally opening the museum in 1946. Today, the Rubenshuis stands as one of the most renowned artist residences in the world. Inside, you will discover a collection of splendid pieces by Rubens, including his “Annunciation” and “Adam and Even,” alongside his fellow artists and contemporaries, such as Anthony van Dyck and Jacques Jordaens. While the house is currently closed for renovations, the garden, library and the Rubens Experience, an interactive video installation, remain open to visitors.
