Major cultural institution anchors America’s “birthplace” city
The Philadelphia Museum of Art ranks among the largest and most important art museums in the United States. Home to more than 225,000 objects, it reflects 2,000 years of global culture. The museum’s many treasures include impressionist masterworks, a Japanese teahouse, an Indian temple hall, a gallery devoted to Philadelphia realist painter Thomas Eakins and historic rooms from structures in Paris, London, Beijing and beyond. Particular highlights are two Marcel Duchamp masterpieces: “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors” and “Étant donnés” and major paintings by Rubens, Renoir and van Gogh. The 72 steps leading up to the museum’s east entrance gained global fame after featuring in the 1976 film, “Rocky”.
