Major global holdings and a spectacular sculpture garden
When the New Orleans Museum of Art opened in 1911 it only had nine works of art on show – now the collection features close to 50,000 pieces. Holdings range from the ancient to the contemporary and are particularly strong in French and American art, photography, glass, and African and Japanese works. Of some note are its collection of works by Edgar Degas who visited his mother’s family in New Orleans in the early 1870s and painted just 20 blocks from the museum. The permanent collection also includes a survey of local Louisiana artists; a major focus on the cultural heritage of North, Central and South America from the pre-Columbian period through the Spanish Colonial era; and an 11.5-acre sculpture garden with more than 90 modern and contemporary sculptures.
