Light-filled sanctuary for expressionist visions
This private museum, founded in 2004, showcases the esteemed collection of German publisher Frieder Burda. Nearly 1,000 works of modern and contemporary art reflect Burda’s fascination with color and the emotional qualities of painting, with particular strengths in German expressionism and American abstract expressionism, plus a notable selection of late paintings by Pablo Picasso and key works by contemporary German artists. Special exhibitions alternate with thematic displays drawn from the permanent collection and, in recent years, with solo shows dedicated to artists such as Nicolas Party, James Turrell, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Matta and Anselm Kiefer. In 2019, the Frieda Burda became the first institution to display Banksy’s infamous “Love Is In The Bin,” from 2018, the artwork created when “Girl With Balloon” shredded itself immediately after being sold at Sotheby’s London. The museum is housed in an acclaimed Richard Meier-designed building and located in the Lichtentaler Allee, a beautiful park in Baden-Baden; often described as its “jewel,” the gleaming museum allows visitors to enjoy the bucolic surroundings while exploring the light-filled galleries.
