McNay Art Museum

San Antonio, Texas | United States

The Lone Star State’s first modern art showcase

Founded in 1954, the McNay Art Museum first occupied a Spanish colonial mansion bequeathed by the painter, collector and oil heiress Marion McNay, along with her personal art collection. The early holdings feature 19th- and 20th-century European and American paintings, including work by Diego Rivera, Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall among others, and Native American and New Mexican folk art. It has expanded to contain over 20,000 works and now features a range of 20th- and 21st-century paintings, sculptures and photographs. Notable highlights include the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts and the Jeanne and Irving Matthews Collection of Art Glass. The McNay expanded in 2008 with the opening of the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, designed by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier. This comprises a gallery space for exhibitions, a garden, a lecture hall and classrooms for the museum’s comprehensive education program.
