Timepieces from the Greatest Watchmakers in History

London | 2–3 July

Sotheby’s is honored to present Masterworks of Time, an unparalleled collection of more than 800 timepieces split across four major sales from New York to Hong Kong. In this video, chairman Daryn Schnipper introduces highlights from our first auction, Masterworks of Time: George Daniels, Visionary, as well as selections from Sotheby’s annual Treasures sale. Headlining the first sale is the Space Traveller I, arguably Daniels’s most famous and coveted watch. Crafted over the course of three years to commemorate the American landing on the moon, this masterpiece of horology utilizes Daniels’s famous independent double wheel escapement and features mean-solar and sidereal time. Highlights also include 17th century watchmaker George Margetts' Magnificent Gold and Enamel pair Cased Astronomical Watch No.1 and a Highly Important Gold, Enamel and Diamond-Set Verge Watch Circa 1650 from Jehan Cremsdorff.
