Four years ago, Sotheby’s Hong Kong held a sold-out exhibition of Alphonso Wong’s iconic depictions of Old Master Q. This summer, he returns! Explore original works by the famed cartoonist and creator of Old Master Q. The collection includes the original artwork for "Rock’n Roll", the earliest existing cover by the artist. In addition to the early covers, the exhibition presents comic strips in four and six-frame formats. Also on display are acrylic paintings by his son, Joseph Wong, whose playful and contemporary interpretation of Old Master Q characters gives new life to the quintessential cultural icon of Hong Kong.
“Old Master Q – Rock'n Roll” , the earliest comic cover artwork in existence, was sold at HK$650,000 at the online only auction earlier in August, exceeding 5 times of the low estimate and setting a new auction record for any Old Master Q original drawings. The selling exhibition is on view at Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery in Hong Kong from now through 25 August.
