The Apollo 11 Moonwalk Tapes and the Broadcast that Changed the World

20 July | New York

In the summer of 1969, the world watched with bated breath as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the surface of the Moon. Families gathered in living rooms, crowds amassed in bars and people all over the world huddled around television sets to catch a glimpse of something that once seemed impossible: Man’s first steps on the Moon. Exactly 50 years later, Sotheby’s will offer the only surviving, first-generation recordings of the historic Apollo 11 moonwalk. In this episode of Expert Voices, senior specialist Cassandra Hatton explores how the famous moonwalk was videotaped and what makes these recordings so extraordinary.
