Surrealism's Legendary Myth: The Minotaur Interpreted by René Magritte, André Masson & Diego Rivera

Paris | 18 October 2024

Presented in partnership with Celine, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Surrealism, Sotheby’s Paris will present three historic gouaches by René Magritte, André Masson and Diego Rivera.

These are preparatory works for the covers of issues 10 and 12-13 of the iconic magazine Le Minotaure.

Conceived as "the organ of the Surrealists, destined to revolutionise the horizon of art magazines and that of art itself." Its initial aim was to unite members of the Surrealist movement and its dissident figures around a common project.

These important preparatory gouaches come from the personal collection of Alberto Schira (later Albert Skira), the founder, along with editors André Breton and Pierre Mabille, of the surrealist publication Minotaure, published in Paris between 1933 and 1939. All three take up the motif of the Minotaur, but explore it in different ways, with pictorial codes firmly rooted in their individual practices, making their grouped reading particularly rewarding.

The live sale will take place in Paris at 2.30 CET on 18 October 2024.
