This late Ming dynasty huanghuali yokeback meditation chair is generously proportioned and constructed with an exceptionally deep and wide seat that is spacious enough for one to sit cross-legged. The finely woven mat seat has also been well preserved in the condition in which it entered the collection. Fusing the quiet elegance of Chan Buddhism with the simplicity of the literati culture and the clean lines of Ming furniture that later influenced Western furniture design, the chair embodies the aesthetic sensibilities of the late Ming literati and their way of displaying their own identity and status.
